Bowel cancer treatment and side effects

Howdy from Lanky Yankee

Howdy all just to say a huge thank you for all your support! This forum has been my lifeline since I was diagnosed 15 months ago.

Since all the media interest a couple of weeks ago I have now had my first cycle of chemo (poxy oxy plus Cape) with Avastin. I'm due my second cycle tomorrow. I saw my Oncologist on Friday who said my bone marrow was holding up well and my liver and kidneys were doing ok. The only marker that refuses to go down is my Alk Phos which for me is a basic way to measure the activity of all my bone mets alongside how much pain im in. I don't have CEA but my alk phos has always been a sensitive measure of how active my disease is. It's been raised now since Christmas and every time I think it's going down it shoots back up! I'm finding it frustrating. Good thing is tho my pain is well controlled by the cocktail of oxycodon my hospice team have me on. I even managed to lay a new floor in my loo on Friday!

My onc says it's too early to tell if the avastin is having any benefits. I for one though feel pretty good and the huge tumour in my abdomen I now can't feel at all! So I would say it's helping! My oncologist is like a father to me and he doesn't like to see me get my hopes up. Since his meeting with me a few weeks ago where he told me to get my affairs in order quickly I have sat with the solicitor and written my will and power of attorney. I'm organising my funeral and putting the money aside for my family so they don't have to worry about any of it.

I have lots of memory box bits I have yet to write for my children and I need to crack on with it but I tend to spend as many hours a day (usually about 6 to 8) being as active as possible with walking the dogs, chores, cooking, shopping etc then I crash in a heap until the next day. I know this goes against pacing yourself and all those wonderful teachings about metering out of your energy supplies but it's my nature. Do any of y'all struggle to balance your energy levels with your activities? How do you manage it?

So this morning I'm off to recruit a new bowelie! My good friends father has just been diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer. He had surgery to his original bowel cancer over 18 months ago with curative intent but now it's come back with a vengeance. Im going over to meet him this morning and hopefully convince him that you can live a meaningful life with stage 4 disease. And to chat with him and his family about what happens now in the NHS system and to put him in touch with his Bowel Cancer nurse specialist. Then I'm going to make dinner for my brood and I have my father in law and his wife on a Sunday. I'm thinking roast beef is in order. Plus it's on sale post Easter! What Sunday plans have y'all got? Yes I promise tonight I'll rest in prep for treatment day tomorrow! I've also got a very important meeting this week with occupational health to determine if I can return to work. Keep your fingers crossed for me please! My huge Yankee love to you all! I'm going to trawl the forum for a bit and see if I can catch up on how tall are doing? If you get a chance to reply to this post please update me on how you are XXX all my love xxxx lanky Yankee :x::x::x:
