Eight weeks after diagnosis Hubby's surgery is this Friday He goes in on Thursday - Ive been ok'ish but its really hit me today. Wish I didnt read Dr Google (thank God he doesn't) and found prognosis for bowel cancer in Wales is worst in Europe. Feel like I've buried my head in sand for the last two months and now feel sick with worry. He's naturally worried about how he'll be after the op but there have been times today when Ive had difficulty breathing im so anxious How do you keep it together when inside you feel like your falling apart 💔

Really feel for u. Hopefully you’ll feel much better once he’s had op & is recovering. Pls don’t read Google; stick to this forum.

Thinking of you both & wishing your husband all best 4 Fri.

Hello @Helly I agree with @determinedjoan with regards to not Googling, the statistics are by necessity not the most up to date (it takes time to gather, collate and publish them) and as you will have realised by reading this forum everyone is very much individual with their response to treatment.

The anxiety is very difficult to deal with and I can only suggest the ‘usual’ things of keeping busy (and deep breathing!)

With very best wishes for Friday xx

@Helly silly as it sounds focusing on your breathing is very worthwhile, breathe in through your nose to a count of seven or eight and blow gently out through your mouth for a longer count (of up to eleven if you can manage it). This technique will work for the worst of the anxious moments xx

My mum described feeling like this before my MDT meeting last week. I am also newly diagnosed and waiting for an op. I imagine it is hard trying to keep it together for your loved ones as you are the supporter. But you need support too. We have the team of specialists but who is there to look after and support you? I’ve stopped using google - I get my support and information on here from people who have been there. I am sure you will be on here at the weekend, when your husband is post-op, feeling relieved and able to breathe again. It must feel a long way off though. Keep busy, keep breathing and remember we’re all rooting for you and hubby. Hang on in there @Helly! Much love x

Dear @Helly, as advised above please do not google if at all possible! The statistics are at least five years out of date and include everybody irrespective of age, frailties, existing illnesses, actual cause of death ( accidents, heat attacks etc). Just out of interest, have you joined the Relative to Relative closed group listed under topics? I know folk find this a very supportive element in addition to the general forum. Please take very good care, Kim xx

Hi @Helly wishing you both all the best for the op today. I well remember being in your position over 6 years ago - it is a long day but good to know at the end the nasties will be in the bin!

As Lirio said please apply to join the relative to relative closed section of the forum as well.

Keep us posted on how the day is going. Don't forget the surgeons do this all the time and he will be well looked after. Look after yourself as well - plenty of chocolate?? xx

Morning @Helly just wanted to wish you all the very best for today. All I can advise is really to take each day as it comes. It really does help not to think too far ahead, and definitely don’t Goigle. Your help is on the forum, So many members have a wealth of first hand knowledge, stick with us and ask for help whenever you need it, from our lovely nurses or our members. Thinking of you today love Diane xx

Hello all Thanks for your good wishes ...surgery was early Friday morning Couldnt do it key hole so full incision. Hubby was offered and had a spinal block before being knocked out to help with pain management afterwards. Surgery went well but his heart rate fell to 27 beats so he went straight to High Dependency for extra care. This morning Tuesday he was discharged from HDU but no beds on colorectal ward so hes home just 4 days after surgery. Surgeon said the outer colon wall looked clean and everything joined up well. He has used the loo and eating small amounts too Feels rougher now he's home than in hospital and I've been shown how to inject him with blood thinner twice daily which I wasnt prepared for ! Onward and upward

Hi @Helly I think we are both in very similar positions. My hubbie has his operation on the 15th Feb and ended up spending some time in HDU too due to a bleed during surgery. Tough time for all but we’re home now and starting to adjust. Sending you lots of love Xx
