Bowel cancer treatment and side effects

Question about scans

My boyfriend is due to start his fourth and final (for the time being) cycle of Xelox next Tuesday. We knew that he was going to be having scans after that to see if the chemo has worked, but when he received the scan appointments they'd scheduled the CT scan for the same afternoon as his chemotherapy appointment, and the MRI scan for a couple of days after that. He decided that he wouldn't feel well enough to go to either of those appointments so has rescheduled both of them. Now the MRI won't be until 30 April! That seems like quite a long time to wait and I'm wondering if he should ring back and try to rebook the original appointment.

I think he wasn't sure about the original MRI appointment being so soon after chemo because his side effects are at their worst for the first few days after getting the oxaliplatin, but also because he gets such bad claustrophobia that he had to take diazepam the last time he had an MRI, so he thought it might all be a bit too much for his body.

Does anyone have any advice about having scans whilst in the throes of chemo side effects? I'm not really sure what we should do now because they might have given away the original appointments to someone else anyway.

I'm also hoping that he will be able to switch to private medical care after this last cycle, so maybe that will give us the chance to get scan appointments a bit quicker. Just not sure exactly when to make the switch!

V well done 👍 to ur boyfriend for nearly completing (this round) of chemo ! Wish him well with last dose.
Due to complete my 6th & final (of this round) Folfoxiri next week too. Then due more scans. I personally wouldn’t want to wait until 30th April for these, but totally understand your boyfriend ‘s reasons for wanting to postpone them. IF nothing available earlier on NHS, maybe now’s the time to switch to motivate scans IF that’s an option for him. V best of luck with ongoing treatment; pls keep us posted on his progress. Thinking of u both & sending love & hugs; you’re both sooo young to be hving to deal with all this - feel 4 u guys :x:

Thanks so much @determinedjoan
Yes I think it's probably time to switch, he did speak to them before but they said to wait until these 4 cycles were done.
I had to take a little break from the forum last week as I was going down a rabbit hole of worry about what the rest of his treatment might be like (ops and radiotherapy etc.). We just need to try and focus on one thing at a time I guess.
Wishing you luck for your upcoming scans! :x:

Hello @spannerkate, I am sorry to hear that your boyfriend has been put in this position but to be honest I think this is a conversation he should be having with either his specialist nurse or oncologist. He should not feel responsible for the timing of the scans, nor is he in a position to make judgements about the medical implications. CT scans usually use contrast dye for example and chemo cannot be given until the dye has left the body, 12-24h later?
Please consider this suggestion and let us know how things go. Take very good care, Kim :x:

@spannerkate I am in a similar situation. My FOLFOX chemo is on Thursday, the pump will be taken off on Saturday then I have a CT scan on Monday. I’ve got really bad joint pain and my other side affects will be kicking in. However, I didn’t want to wait any longer as my last scan was back in October! :x::x:

spannerkate

@Jomo9 I don't blame you! All the best for your upcoming scan.
@Lirio345 thanks for your message, I didn't know that about not being able to have a CT until the chemo has left your body.
He spoke to his specialist nurse today and she's managed to rearrange both scans for 10 April. Then he has an appointment with his oncologist on 26 April so I guess that's when we'll find out if it's worked! It's a nerve-wracking time but I'll try to plan loads of fun activities to take his mind off it. I'm also going to try to book us a holiday for the week after he gets the results as he'll be turning 41 that week.
Onwards and upwards! :x:

Oh those dates make a bit more sense @spannerkate; I am glad your boyfriend’s specialist nurse has been able to move things around a bit. You are absolutely right to keep busy and plan lovely things whilst waiting for the results. As I understand it, it is the CT contrast dye that has to leave the body before chemo or blood tests ........ I think that the hospital had a temporary left and right hand malfunction on dates of scans ...... it happens! Stay in touch, Kim :x::x:

Thanks both! Just booked a holiday to Italy today, wahoo!
