Diarrhoea

My husband was diagnosed with bowel & liver cancer in Jan 2020. In view of his age, 88, no treatment offered. He has bouts of diarrhoea, is this a common side effect? He doesn’t have pain, which is good, but it limits how far he can be from wc.
Would be good to know if others have this problem.
He then has a few days of opposite problem. His consultant prescribed 2 Senokot every night, 20ml Lactulose every morning plus plenty of fluids.

Hi @Bethsgran
Welcome to the forum. I am sorry to hear about your husband.
Bowel cancer can cause all sorts of issues as your husband is experiencing, which is difficult and exhausting.

I would suggest that he / you go back to his consultant or specialist nurse for further advice. It’s difficult for anyone here to suggest any medical advice as its an individual assessment.

Just a thought to see if it can be linked to any certain foods. Maybe worth keeping a diary for a while to see if you can find any triggers.

Take care
Jane :x:

He has contacted his specialist nurse, who isn’t concerned. She’s much more anxious that he avoids constipation. We will keep a food diary, thanks for suggestion.

Hi @Bethsgran and a very warm welcome to the forum! I'm sure you'll find this a lovely supportive and friendly community.

I'm sorry to read of your husbands diagnosis and ongoing symptoms. I would absolutely agree with @Jane39 in that you should definitely seek some additional advice and support from his Oncologist/specialist nurse to help manage these distressing symptoms. I'm not sure from your post if your husband can manage to loo in terms of his health and mobility but I just hope that your getting the practical support at home too if he needs it. If not, your GP surgery may be able to get further support for you both.

Sending lots of love to you and your husband,

Karen 💚💛💜❤️💙
